About This Event
Hear from leading experts dedicated to protecting and raising awareness of the Ordnance Survey’s legacy, and discover how it continues to shape and define our modern landscape. Event Schedule: This event will start at 10:30am with an opening introduction to the Maps & Memories project. This will be followed by our first guest speaker: Malachy Conway (National Trust) Hear from the National Trust’s Archaeologist for Northern Ireland and learn about the latest insights and research from Divis Mountain, Belfast. Join us in the Belfast Room for a complimentary tea and coffee. During the break, explore live demonstrations of the Historic Environment Map Viewer with one of the archaeologists from HERoNI (Historic Environment Record of NI) and and hear from Ordnance Survey Northern Ireland on their mapping archive. Our final guest speaker will be Dr. Frances Kane (Queen’s University Belfast) Discover how Ordnance Survey archives remain at risk today, alongside a fascinating look at their modern applications. Maps & Memories is a 2 year community heritage project that marks 200 years since the first mapping survey began on Divis Mountain by the Ordnance Survey. These early efforts laid the foundations for how we understand land, ownership, identity & geography across the island today.
