About This Event
Birchwood Art Studio in Edinburgh is delighted to announce its upcoming 3 Day Pentlands Sketchbook Workshop, scheduled to take place from 3 August 2026. This immersive creative experience will be led by the accomplished tutor Sam Spence, who will guide participants in a journey to capture the rugged beauty of the Pentland Hills. The workshop's core focus lies in encouraging experimental and expressive mark-making techniques. Attendees will explore a diverse range of approaches, including the creation of rubbings and the development of spontaneous sketches, all designed to translate their personal encounters with the landscape onto paper. A variety of art materials will be provided and explored, enabling participants to record their unique observations and sensory experiences of the hills. The workshop spans three full days, offering ample time for both exploration and artistic development. Further details regarding pricing and booking can be found on the Birchwood Art Studio website.
Join tutor and Birchwood founder Sam Spence for two days capturing the magnificence of the Pentland Hills. Expect to fill a sketchbook full of experimental and expressive marks, rubbings, and sketches in a variety of materials that truly reflect your memories and experience of this beautiful, wild environment. Track your progress on the walk with energy-filled thumbnail scribbles, while taking time to enjoy the surroundings and the act of creativity—without pressure. Try out new techniques and materials, including naturally found objects, to reflect your view of the day and build your confidence. About the Tutor Sam grew up at the foot of the Pentlands with a sketchbook in her pocket and a pencil behind her ear. Every day offered a new drawing adventure and an opportunity to explore the reservoirs and hills on foot and on horseback. She is a keen believer in the rejuvenating power of observing a hill from a ditch while waiting for the drizzle to clear, and in the benefits of drawing and painting for the pure joy of it. Her ethos is that “Anyone Can”, so this workshop is open to all levels—even those who are convinced they can’t. She will avoid extreme slopes and stick to well-trodden paths; however, students should be able to walk for up to 15 minutes at a time, cover approximately 2–3 miles over the course of the day, manage gentle inclines, wear suitable all-weather walking attire, and carry lunch, water, sunscreen, and sketching equipment (materials are included and provided on Day 1). Facilities & Practical Information - There are portaloos at Harlaw Reservoir. - There is a café and toilet facilities at Flotterstone. Students must make their own way to and from the set locations and bring their own packed lunch. The workshop is attended entirely at the participant’s own risk. The intention is to brave the weather; however, should conditions be extreme, the workshop will take place in the studio, working from photographic references. Further route details and assistance with travel arrangements will be supplied nearer the time. Students will ideally attend the full three day workshop, however those who wish to do so may join for the first two (outdoor) days only. The third day of the workshop will be in the studio. 3 Day Workshop: Pentlands & Studio Monday 3rd, Tuesday 4th & Wednesday 5th August from 10am - 3.30pm £285 2 Day Workshop: Pentlands (en plein air only) Monday 3rd & Tuesday 4th August from 10am - 3.30pm £190 All materials provided.
