Directly from Tokyo ★★★★(★) “One of the most remarkable manifestations of physical theatre and dance I have ever seen” - View From the Gods Daring Work - ‘intimate, delicate, visually stunning’ - Fringe Review “A standout of the festival.” — Brighton Fringe Review “Joanna Rosenfeld is the most intense, brave and astonishing performer I’ve seen on a stage in the last 30 years.”— 3:AM Magazine Created and performed by Joanna Rosenfeld, Resonant Void is an experimental Butoh solo developed through eight years of embodied practice and a year and a half of intensive study and artistic development in Tokyo with Butoh artists, dramaturges and teachers. Premiering in Tokyo in December 2024, the work marks Rosenfeld’s first fully Butoh-inspired solo: a visceral, intimate journey through rupture, transformation and quiet becoming. Using a mosquito net, plastic sheeting, black skirts, projection and portable light, Resonant Void creates a shifting landscape where body and material continuously transform one another. The work explores states of unmaking—where identity loosens, inherited roles dissolve, and the body enters unfamiliar territory. Rooted in Butoh’s radical engagement with darkness, memory and the subconscious, the performance resists fixed narrative. Instead, it invites audiences into a contemplative encounter with emergence, fragmentation, and the unstable edges of selfhood. German-born and UK-based, Rosenfeld’s practice spans performance art, physical theatre and experimental movement. With Resonant Void, she brings a deeply personal interpretation of Butoh—shaped through Japanese training and her own longstanding artistic language—to Edinburgh audiences. CREDITS Concept / Choreography / Performance: Joanna Rosenfeld Original Ambient Music: Keita Miyano Dramaturgy: Conan Amok Developed at the Hijikata Archive, Saruhashi, under the supervision of Yuko Kawamoto, and in Nagoya under the care of Motoya Kondo. Initially produced by Sanzen Camp, Tokyo, Japan. Supported by The Authentic Artist Collective. Part of the PBH Free Fringe and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
