About This Event
Sauchiehall Street: a streetscape of retail and other spaces mobilized for war 1937-1945 is a free event on 14th August 2026 at Edward House in Glasgow, with a ticket required.
What has Edward House, Daly’s Department Store and Nice and Sleazy got in common? Edward House stands on the location of Daly’s Warehouse (199 Sauchiehall Street)and like all big warehouses on Sauchiehall Street provided advice and information to aid Britian’s war effort. From classes on Make do and Mend to displays on the work of the British Red Cross, Prisoner of War Service. Where does Nice and Sleazy fit in? Above Nice and Sleazy’s was the location of the British Red Cross next to Kin Packing Centre. Relatives of POW’s sent parcels into the Centre to be sorted and censored before being dispatched to their loved ones. In August, we will be joined for a talk by researcher Kevin Morrison who will share about war efforts made by retail spaces in Glasgow, creating comparisons between Sauchiehall Street and Argyll Street. Come along and find out how the - Bond Street of Glasgow - Sauchiehall Street’s shops contributed to war efforts in 1939-45 (with some other surprises along the way!).
