Chaired by James archivist and writer Dave Brown at Manchester’s iconic Carlton Club. We are proud to announce a unique and intimate screening of the highly anticipated music documentary James: Getting Away With It, followed by an exclusive live Q&A with key figures from the seminal band. Directed by BAFTA-nominated documentary maker, screenwriter and author Chris Atkins, the film tells the remarkable story of James, from their humble beginnings in the early 1980s to chart-topping success and a place among Manchester’s most celebrated musical exports. Joining the Q&A will be Larry Gott, Ivor Novello Icon Award winner and James guitarist, songwriter and core member from 1984–1996 and 2007–2015. He will be accompanied by drummer Dave Baynton-Power, who has been with the band since 1989, and trumpeter Andy Diagram, whose distinctive contribution of “farting down a tube” has become an integral part of the James sound. Also appearing is acclaimed orchestrator and arranger Joe Duddell, whose work on Be Opened By The Wonderful and James’s orchestral tours has helped reimagine the band’s extensive catalogue for new audiences. The chair for the evening is Dave Brown, creator of the definitive James archive OneOfTheThree.co.uk, author of the Even the Stars blog, contributor to Louder Than War magazine, and member of Andy Burnham’s Greater Manchester Music Commission. This unique event takes place at The Carlton Club in Whalley Range – one of the band’s original rehearsal spaces and a location featured in the documentary itself.
