A 4.5 hour volunteer-led walk round High Dam to Rusland Heights and then to Finsthwaite. With some rocky, muddy sections and steep descents.
Start point: High Dam LDNP car park (Please DO NOT use a postcode to try to find this car park - the confirmation email contains precise instructions)
Length: 9.4 km (5.8 miles) with 380m (1246 ft) of ascent
Time: 4.5 hours (approx.)
Walk grade: 4 (see grade description below)
This walk starts by visiting High Dam, created in the 19th century to power the Stott Park Bobbin Mill. From here the walk ascends Rusland Heights with excellent views over the Rusland Valley before descending to return via ancient woods and fields and Finsthwaite village with its Grade II listed church, St Peter's, which includes the grave of the 'Finsthwaite Princess'.
Paths are generally good but there is a steep, stony descent with an awkward section. Some parts can be muddy in poor weather.
Grade 4 walks are generally full day walks that include hilly ground and require a reasonable level of fitness. You might encounter climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces may be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, and you may also find yourself walking up irregular steps, over stiles or through narrow gates and gaps.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.
