Prof Peter A Hall will present 'Governing Growth' on 9 December 2026 at the University of Bath. The talk will examine the interaction of politics and economics in Western democracies over the past eighty years. Attendance is free.
Peter Hall discusses how politics and economics have interacted in Western democracies over the past eighty years.
About the event
How do capitalist economies change over time, and what political consequences follow? In this event, Peter Hall, Krupp Foundation Professor of European Studies at Harvard University, examines the interactions between politics and economics in Western democracies over the past 80 years.
He outlines the concept of growth regimes, each shaped by the interaction of public policies and private firms. Each growth regime, he explains, is accompanied by a representation regime, which determines whose voices have the greatest influence over public policy. Examining three postwar eras – modernisation (1945-1975), liberalisation (1980s-1990s) and knowledge-based growth (from 2000 onwards) – Hall sheds light on the relationship between capitalism and democracy, and on the origins of many of today's political challenges.
This event is open to all.
