On 22 September 2026, dark historian Andrew Johnston will present an illustrated Terror Talk at the Boundary Taproom in Belfast as part of his Alternative Ulstours series. The session explores Ireland's grim history regarding witch hunts and witch trials through a documented narrative presentation. Tickets are priced between £15.00 and £20.00 for attendees wishing to join this workshop-style event.
WHAT'S UP, WITCHES?
Join dark historian Andrew Johnston of Alternative Ulstours at the Boundary Taproom for an illustrated Terror Talk documenting Ireland's grim record of witch hunts and witch trials.
Andrew will conjure tales of persecution of 'wise-women' and 'demoniacs' spanning more than 500 years, from the burning at the stake of Petronilla de Meath in 1324 to Ireland's so-called 'last witch', Bridget Cleary, murdered by her husband in 1895. Hear in gory detail about the harsh Witchcraft Acts and the brutal mob justice that tormented a land riven by religious difference and social change. Hark back to when Paganism and Christianity coexisted uneasily in a forbidding brew of fear and mistrust.
The talk will feature a full account of the Islandmagee witch trials of 1711, including fresh revelations. This infamous episode of alleged demonic possession in a remote Presbyterian community remains terrifying and controversial even today!
So, come along, grab a beer, take a seat and fall under the spell of Alternative Ulstours!
