About This Event

Blackhead Lightkeeper’s House in Whitehead will welcome the public on Sunday 13 September 2026, opening its doors as part of European Heritage Open Days. From 10am to 4pm, visitors can explore this historic building on Old Castle Road, which once served as the home for the keepers responsible for maintaining the nearby lighthouse. This free event features a programme of workshops, offering a practical insight into the site’s maritime heritage and the daily routines of its former residents. Local artists and heritage specialists will lead the sessions, sharing their knowledge of the building’s restoration and the broader coastal history of the area. No booking is required, and entry remains free throughout the day.

To celebrate European Heritage Open Days 2026, Blackhead Lightkeepers’ Houses in Whitehead will be open on Sunday 13th Sept from 10am to 4pm

This is a free event and a chance to explore the coastal heritage of these beautifully restored houses, perched beside the still-operating Blackhead Lighthouse. Take in sweeping views over Belfast Lough and discover the lives of the lightkeepers who once lived and worked here. Please note that the lighthouse tower is not part of the open day.

Parking: There is no parking at the Lighthouse or anywhere along McCraes Brae. Visitors will need to park at Whitehead and walk the coastal path to the Lighthouse. Children should be accompanied at all times. NO DOGS ALLOWED.

Accessibility: Visitors with mobility issues should contact bookings@irishlandmark.com. The properties' interiors may not be suitable for those who have mobility issues and need assistance, as there are steep stairs to the upper and lower floors.
