Making it Worse: The Seductions of Productive Failure
Debbie Lisle is a Professor of International Relations in the School of HAPP & a Fellow of the Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. She served on the Governing Board of the European International Studies Association (EISA) and currently edits the EISA-OUP book series Voices in International Relations. She was named International Political Sociology (IPS) Distinguished Scholar in 2021, and between 2017-2021 she was Editor-In-Chief of the journal International Political Sociology. Her research is situated in Critical International Relations and International Political Sociology, but draws from a wide terrain of transdisciplinary concepts in Geography, Sociology, Anthropology and the Humanities. Her early work explores how global politics emerge in the cultural realm and led to several publications examining photography, museums, art and cinema including her first book The Global Politics of Contemporary Travel Writing (CUP, 2006). She developed the intersections of travel, violence, war and culture in her second book, Holidays in the Danger Zone: Entanglements of War and Tourism (University of Minnesota press, 2016) which won the IPS Best Book Award in 2018. Her more recent work explores the intersections of materiality, technology, security and futurity, with a particular focus on how failure is made productive in global register.
