Develop your fire craft and outdoor cooking skills, exploring practical techniques to confidently introduce campfire cooking to others.
Join Field Studies Ireland for a practical and enjoyable Campfire Cooking course, designed for those wishing to develop their personal fire craft skills while learning how to safely introduce campfire cooking into their teaching, community or outdoor activities.
This fully outdoor course explores a range of campfire cooking techniques, equipment and menu options, from simple, low-risk food choices to more advanced meals requiring greater food and fire safety considerations.
Participants will develop their confidence in building, lighting and managing cooking fires, while experimenting with different cooking methods and ingredients. We will explore how to plan and facilitate campfire cooking experiences for different groups, considering food hygiene, safe equipment use, dietary requirements and appropriate risk management.
This is not a survival skills course. It is an Outdoor Education workshop designed to empower participants to use campfire cooking as an accessible, enjoyable and meaningful activity that supports practical learning, teamwork, independence and shared experiences outdoors.
Field Studies Ireland is a not-for-profit organisation specialising in Outdoor Education. Our expertise lies in using Outdoor Education as a methodology across a wide range of subjects, settings and environments, placing us in a unique position to deliver practical, meaningful training.
We exist to empower access to Outdoor Education, helping people and organisations bring what they do outdoors, for the benefit of education, development and wellbeing.
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for adults wishing to develop their personal campfire cooking skills and learn how to safely facilitate cooking activities for others.
It is particularly relevant to educators, youth workers, outdoor leaders, volunteers, community practitioners and anyone interested in incorporating campfire cooking into their outdoor activities.
Participants are advised to complete ‘Intro: Nature Skills’ before attending, as this provides a useful foundation in fire lighting and fire management. However, this is not essential, and those with suitable existing knowledge or experience are welcome to participate.
What to expect
Expect a friendly, practical and engaging learning experience, delivered entirely outdoors by Mark O’Connor, founder of Field Studies Ireland.
Participants will spend much of the course preparing fires, cooking food, experimenting with techniques and sharing meals. The emphasis is on practical, achievable cooking experiences that can be adapted for different groups and outdoor environments.
Certification is available to participants who have successfully completed ‘Intro: Nature Skills’ alongside this course. Those without the introductory training are welcome to attend, with certification available once the required training has been completed.
As this course takes place outdoors, participants should expect uneven terrain and variable weather conditions. Suitable outdoor clothing and footwear are required.
Group Training
Field Studies Ireland regularly delivers this training directly to organisations, teams and community groups, often within their own local outdoor environments. The courses advertised here are intended for individuals or small groups wishing to join scheduled training.
