Overview

This event marks the launch of NICCY’s rights-based review of Children’s Experiences of Missed Education and is sponsored by Cathy Mason MLA, and co-sponsored by Nick Mathison MLA and Robbie Butler MLA.

What is event about?

The Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY) has conducted research exploring children’s experiences of missed education. Drawing from our engagement with young people, parents/carers and education professionals, this launch will share our findings highlighting experiences of children and young people who are missing out on an effective, full-time education. Capturing young people’s voices and enhancing understanding of their diverse experiences of missed education was at the core of this research.

The research brings together the perspectives of young people with diverse experiences and needs, parents/carers, and education professionals to highlight key education barriers, support available, and the impact of missed education on children and their parents/carers, informing recommendations to government aimed at ensuring all children can enjoy fully their right to an effective education.

Format of the event

This event will launch the findings and recommendations of NICCY’s rights-based review of children’s experiences of missed education. It will be hosted by Chris Quinn, Commissioner for Children and Young People, and chaired by Alex Tenannt, Interim Chief Executive. Key findings and recommendations will be presented by Dr Arlene Robertson.

This will be followed by a panel discussion, with opportunity for attendees to ask questions and get involved in the discussion. We are delighted to be joined by Ema Cubbitt, Independent Reviewer for NI, and Claire McClelland, Director of Raising Aspirations and Supporting Learning, Department of Education. Further panel members and speakers will also attend.
