Opened in 1885 as the first municipal School of Art, this building still functions as a school of art today.
In 1885, the first municipal School of Art, moved into its new premises on Margaret Street in the City’s civic district. Built by the renowned firm of architects, Martin and Chamberlain, to a Venetian Gothic design, with motifs drawn from nature. This magnificent example of craftsmanship was the centre of both the Birmingham School and the Arts and Crafts movement in the City. Today it continues to function as a School of Art, within Birmingham City University.
The visit will include a talk about the origins of the building and a small display of archival artefacts. A guided tour of the building will provide an opportunity to see a workshop in action. Participants will be able to see areas not normally accessible to the public and to take photographs. We will look at the gallery, purpose-built studios and workshops as well as view original Victorian casts.
