Join UBBI for a special conversation with three distinguished Brazilian scholars whose work is helping to shape public policy, sustainability, culture and society.
Through their research, leadership and engagement, our speakers exemplify the many ways in which scholarship can contribute to addressing global challenges and creating positive societal change.
The event will feature short reflections from each speaker, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A chaired by Dr Courtney Campbell, Academic Co-Director of the University of Birmingham Brazil Institute (UBBI).
Speakers
Prof Deborah Carvalho Malta,
Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG)
Recipient of Brazil's prestigious Women and Science Award, Prof Malta is one of Brazil's leading public health researchers and an internationally recognised expert in epidemiology, health inequalities, non-communicable diseases and evidence-informed policymaking.
During a distinguished career in public service, she spent 12 years as a Director within Brazil's Ministry of Health, where she led the National Plan to Combat Non-Communicable Diseases and oversaw major national health surveillance programmes. She currently serves on advisory groups for the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and coordinates Brazil's Global Burden of Disease programme.
Prof Líliam Cristina Barros Cohen,
Federal University of Pará (UFPA)
Recipient of Brazil's prestigious Women and Science Award, Prof Cohen is an internationally recognised ethnomusicologist and Coordinator of the Laboratory of Ethnomusicology at UFPA.
Her research explores Amazonian cultures, music and identity, intangible cultural heritage, museums and social museology, sustainability, and plural knowledge systems. Through her work, she has helped advance understanding of the cultural diversity of the Amazon and the importance of traditional and community-based knowledge in addressing contemporary challenges.
Prof Juliana Ramalho Barros, Chico Mendes Chair, University of Birmingham
Federal University of Goiás (UFG)
Prof Barros is a leading scholar in geographical climatology and socio-environmental studies, whose research focuses on climate, sustainability, environmental change, health, conservation and human-environment relationships.
Her work spans climate and health, environmental perception, traditional communities, ecotourism, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. As the University of Birmingham's new Chico Mendes Chair, she is helping strengthen academic collaboration between the UK and Brazil on critical environmental and societal challenges.
