About this project
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is piloting a new programme designed to help families discover practical ways to cycle together. Through friendly advice, hands-on equipment demonstrations and opportunities to explore different options, we want to help parents and carers feel more confident about incorporating cycling into family life. This workshop is part of a wider programme helping families learn about cycling with young children and find solutions that work for their everyday journeys
Whether you're completely new to family cycling, curious about child seats or trailers, or simply interested in seeing what options are available, this session provides a welcoming space to learn, ask questions and connect with other parents and carers exploring similar journeys.
What to expect
This is a free group workshop led by family cycling specialists.
Unlike our 1-2-1 sessions, this workshop brings families together to explore family cycling equipment as a group, learn from shared discussions and see a wide range of equipment options in one session.
During the workshop, you will:
Learn about different types of family cycling equipment, including front and rear child seats and bike trailers.
Understand the advantages, limitations, costs, storage considerations and practicalities of different equipment choices.
Take part in discussions about different family circumstances and explore which options might suit different types of journeys.
See equipment fitted to bikes and compare options side-by-side.
Handle equipment, observe fitting demonstrations and ask questions.
Learn practical tips for riding with children, carrying additional weight and building confidence.
Have the opportunity to try equipment and take part in short demonstrations in a safe, traffic-free space where appropriate.
Leave with a better understanding of your options and the next steps available to you, including equipment loans, cycle training and further support.
Sessions are informal, practical and designed to help parents make informed decisions about family cycling.
Who is this for?
This session is suitable for:
Parents, carers or guardians of infants and toddlers (aged between 6 months and 4 years)
People who are interested in cycling with a child but don't know where to start.
Families considering purchasing or borrowing child-carrying equipment.
People who would like to see a range of family cycling equipment before deciding what to try.
Parents and carers who enjoy learning alongside others and hearing about different family experiences.
No previous experience of family cycling is required, although adults should already know how to ride a bicycle. If you'd benefit from cycle training, we can help signpost you to appropriate support.
Children are welcome to attend.
Please note: This project focuses on carrying infants and toddlers by bike. The workshop will not cover children riding their own bikes independently.
What to bring
If possible, please bring:
Your bicycle (if you have one) and a helmet.
Any child-carrying equipment you already own and would like advice on.
Your child(ren), if you’d like them to attend! And a helmet for them if you already have one (we have ones to loan if not!).
Any questions you would like to ask
If you do not currently own a bike or equipment, you are still very welcome to attend- the session will run out of a bike library, so you are welcome to borrow a bike instead.
If transporting both your bike and your child is too much of a logistical nightmare, fear not, you can borrow a bike if you can’t leave your child at home!
Who is delivering the session?
This session will be delivered in partnership by Krimmz and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).
Reham Krimmz: Reham is a mum who is excitingly beginning her journey cycling with her with her young children and is passionate about helping other parents and carers discover the benefits of family cycling. Having attended three of our family cycling sessions, Reham is now being supported and trained to deliver these sessions on behalf of Krimmz in the future. She will be sharing her own experiences, practical tips, and encouragement to help you find solutions that work for your family.
Emily Wormald, TfGM: Emily previously worked for Cycle Sprog, a family cycling website, where she reviewed and wrote about a wide range of family cycling equipment. She is passionate about helping families find the right cycling setup for their needs and enjoys sharing the pros and cons of different options. Emily is also a keen leisure cyclist and runs a women's cycling community in the Lake District, with café rides and family rides among her favourites.
We're excited that this project is beginning the transition from TfGM-led delivery to community-led delivery through Krimmz. Emily will be supporting the session and helping to train Reham, building local capac
