Mushroom Foraging Walk – Woodland (Boletes, Amanitas) & Moorland (Waxcaps & Interesting Species)
Autumn Foraging Walk at Redisher Woods (Fungi & Embodied Foraging)
Join our guided mushroom foraging walk through Redisher’s woodland and moorland habitats. Discover waxcaps and other fascinating fungi while learning how to identify edible species safely.
Redisher Woods is a hidden gem for autumn foraging — a patchwork of mature woodland, open glades and moorland that create perfect conditions for a rich variety of fungi. This location offers a wonderful mix of species commonly found in old woodlands, including porcini, russulas, amanitas and some of the more "interesting" seasonal discoveries like waxcaps that tend to turn up on moorland habitats.
This is a chance to slow down, tune in, and explore the subtle rhythms of the forest. We’ll learn to confidently identify a handful of common mushrooms, understand the ecological roles of fungi in woodland systems, and talk through key features that help with safe identification.
We’ll also introduce some ideas from Embodied Foraging — a sensory approach to nature connection that invites you to notice how we move through the woods, what draws our attention, and how we build a relationship with place through more than just facts and species categorization.
Practical Info:
This is a relaxed, slow-paced walk, covering around one to two miles depending on detours and discoveries. Some of the paths are uneven and some are steep with a bit of a climb, and if it’s wet, the ground can be muddy or slippery in places. Please wear sturdy footwear and bring waterproofs.
We’ll pause somewhere scenic to eat, so bring a packed lunch and snacks. If we gather enough wild edibles we will head back for a shared tasting session at the end of the forage, a simple fry-up of mushrooms we’ve identified.
What to Bring:
Sturdy footwear (boots or wellies)
Waterproofs
Packed lunch and drink
Basket or field bag (optional)
Knife, staff, and ID books if you have them (optional)
Notebook if you like to take notes
