The 'back of the net' Breakfast

Women’s sport rarely gets the same attention as men’s, and Lucy and Pippa Tallant were determined to do something about it.

The result is Crossbar, Britain’s first all-female sports bar, which the couple opened in Upper North Street in February. With eights screens, it showcases and celebrates women’s sport, much of which is normally behind a paywall. The pub welcomes men but is unashamedly woman-centric – so you’ll find decent wine and female-friendly events.

Pivoting from the global music industry to hospitality is a major change for co-founder Lucy. A Music Week "30 Under 30" honouree, in her previous life she managed a diverse roster including a UK number 1, over 20 UK top 10 records, as well as Grammy winners and international tours.

So where did the idea for Crossbar come from, what made her take the leap of faith, and what has she learned since opening?

At our September breakfast, Lucy will be interviewed by Karen Dobres, the former Lewes FC board member who knows a thing or two about making sport more inclusive to women. Karen helped create Lewes’ Equality FC project where male and female players were paid the same, and is now a regular speaker at Sports and Business conferences about equality in football.

The Chamber’s monthly Breakfast at Bill’s is very popular, so you’ll need to book early.

50 to 80 business people from Brighton and the surrounding areas come together to meet, eat and network on the fourth Friday of each month*.

There is a wide range of people who attend from all sectors and all sizes. From sole traders and start-ups to some of the biggest businesses in the city.

Each month there is a guest speaker, who'll talk about their own experiences of running a business and their own personal journey.

Breakfast options: If you are anything like us, you’ll want to know what’s on the menu in advance. You will choose what you’d like on the day

Here are the options:

Cooked meat - Fried free-range eggs, Cumberland sausage, smoked streaky bacon, roasted plum tomatoes, mushrooms and toast (gluten-free/dairy-free available).

Avocado on sourdough - Harrisa and lemon dressed cherry tomatoes, coriander and lime, on sourdough with avocado and spinach mix (vegan. gluten-free available).

Berry pancakes - A stack of buttermilk pancakes served with syrup, berries and whipped vanilla cream (vegan and gluten-free available).

Granola - Fresh fruit, dried cranberries, cinnamon, syrup, yoghurt and granola (vegan and gluten-free).

Eggs florentine - Poached free-range eggs, wilted spinach and hollandaise served on a toasted muffin (gluten-free available).

There is also tea, coffee and water available throughout the event.

*Chamber Breakfasts are held on the fourth Friday of each month, except in August and December when they are slightly earlier.

What's the refund policy? Tickets are refundable up to 4 working days before the event start time. After this deadline, tickets are non-refundable; however, they may be transferred to another person for the same event or to another event of the same value. To arrange a transfer, please email Poppy at poppy@brightonchamber.co.uk with the booking name and details of the new attendee or preferred alternative event.

*Eventbrite booking fees are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled or there are duplicate charges.

Can I attend if I am not a member of the Chamber? If you have never been a member of the Chamber you can book and join as a guest at two of our events (just one Chamber Breakfast).
