Come and jam with us, take risks and play, safe in the hands of improv legends Do The Thing - our musical improv jam guest stars! ★★★★★
What makes an improv jam FUN?
Knowing that whatever you do, you're in great hands, great company and everyone will make you look FANTASTIC.
And who better to make you look fantastic than Brighton improv legends, Do The Thing! 🤩
How does this jam work?
Our guest stars will be participating throughout the event, joining in with each group of jammers to add fun, mischief and improv genius to your scenes!
Here's the lineup:
4pm - We'll allocate you to a group of jammers and give you warm up exercises. We want you to get to know each other and feel comfortable playing together before you get up to perform!
4:30 - The jam starts with a brief guest star interview with Do The Thing! A chance for us to get to know our improv superstars who will be jumping into scenes throughout the jam.
4:40 - Over to you! We'll bring up one group of jammers at a time to do a short longform set with support from our special guests. There'll be musical underscoring or backing for songs if you feel inspired!
Between each set, we'll celebrate all the wondrous improv we're witnessing as our host chats with our guest stars - also ensuring there's no interruption to our collaborative show whilst groups swap over.
Do I have to sing?
You don't have to sing. In fact, you don't have to do ANYTHING! This is improv, which means we're making it all up as we go along.
We have no expectations from you except that you are kind and look after yourself!
What is longform improv anyway?
Longform improv is where we start with one simple suggestion and then go on an improv adventure to see where it takes us.
In shortform improv, you might play a game with a clear rule, then finish it and move on to something completely different.
In longform, we stay in the same world for longer, though not necessarily in the same place or with the same characters. We enjoy seeing how each scene, or series of scenes, can inspire the next, following whatever feels fun, surprising or makes us curious.
Who is it for?
Experienced players: Our guest stars will challenge you to take risks and make bold choices - to surprise yourself! Take this opportunity to try new things and play.
Beginners: If you are new to longform improv, we will take care of you and make you look fabulous! That's just what improvisers do.
Do I need to be clever, fast and funny?
Not at all! The magic of improv is in showing up as you are and seeing what happens when anything is possible.
You, just as you are, is everything we need.
What will I take away from the jam?
Joy! And that 'I can do anything' feeling that comes from improvising and surprising yourself in the most delightful ways.
We hope you'll feel braver as an improviser too, after playing in a safe space where risks and playfulness are truly encouraged.
At the end of the night, we'll have drinks at the Playhouse and celebrate the risks we took, the surprises we discovered and all the fun we had together! 🥳
