About This Event

Brighton's iconic Madeira Drive will be the setting for a special event on Thursday 24 September 2026, offering a unique opportunity to explore the historic seafront arches as part of their ongoing restoration. This guided tour delves into the second phase of the ambitious Madeira Terrace restoration project, providing a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of this significant heritage undertaking. Attendees will have the chance to engage directly with the individuals and organisations involved in bringing the terraces back to their former glory. A range of contributors will be on hand, creating a valuable platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and networking amongst professionals and enthusiasts within the heritage conservation and urban development sectors. The tour commences promptly at 10:30 am, and a modest fee of £5.00 is required for participation. This promises to be an informative and engaging morning for anyone interested in Brighton's architectural past and future.

A chance to tour the Madeira Terrace seafront arches and promenade in Brighton in the second phase of restoration.

Please note: this event is for over 18’s only.

Madeira Terrace is a Grade 2* listed 865-metre-long stretch of seafront arches and promenade on Madeira Drive in Brighton. Mackley has been appointed by Brighton & Hove City Council to undertake the first phase of the restoration.

The project includes the refurbishment of 28 of the arches between the Royal Crescent steps and Shelter Hall / Concorde 2, which have been inaccessible to the public for a number of years due to their condition. Works include dismantling all cast iron elements for shot blasting and repairs, followed by painting and reassembly. There will also be work on the promenade, with a full replacement of the upper deck that incorporates lighting and infrastructure for future activity and events. There will also be a new lift installation to allow full accessibility.

CIOB visitors to the site will be able to learn about the dismantling of the cast iron arches and the complex process involved in carefully removing the Victorian structure. They will see how Mackley tracked and catalogued each piece of ironwork to ensure it could be returned to its original bay, and gain insight into the specialist testing and restoration currently being undertaken at the foundry. Visitors will also be able to observe elements of the structure being reassembled, providing a clear view of how the restored pieces are being reinstated. In addition, they will see some of the challenges faced by the team, including working with historic construction materials and managing the Japanese spindle plants that had become rooted in the rear wall.

Please note that 5 point PPE is required to attend this site visit. Attendees should bring their own PPE, to include:

Steel capped boots

High viz vest

Safety goggles
