A chance to tour the Madeira Terrace seafront arches and promenade in Brighton in the second phase of restoration.
Please note: this event is for over 18’s only.
Madeira Terrace is a Grade 2* listed 865-metre-long stretch of seafront arches and promenade on Madeira Drive in Brighton. Mackley has been appointed by Brighton & Hove City Council to undertake the first phase of the restoration.
The project includes the refurbishment of 28 of the arches between the Royal Crescent steps and Shelter Hall / Concorde 2, which have been inaccessible to the public for a number of years due to their condition. Works include dismantling all cast iron elements for shot blasting and repairs, followed by painting and reassembly. There will also be work on the promenade, with a full replacement of the upper deck that incorporates lighting and infrastructure for future activity and events. There will also be a new lift installation to allow full accessibility.
CIOB visitors to the site will be able to learn about the dismantling of the cast iron arches and the complex process involved in carefully removing the Victorian structure. They will see how Mackley tracked and catalogued each piece of ironwork to ensure it could be returned to its original bay, and gain insight into the specialist testing and restoration currently being undertaken at the foundry. Visitors will also be able to observe elements of the structure being reassembled, providing a clear view of how the restored pieces are being reinstated. In addition, they will see some of the challenges faced by the team, including working with historic construction materials and managing the Japanese spindle plants that had become rooted in the rear wall.
Please note that 5 point PPE is required to attend this site visit. Attendees should bring their own PPE, to include:
Steel capped boots
High viz vest
Safety goggles
Gloves
Hard hat
