The Cyanotype Studio with Nina Garstang is a six-week workshop course at the Phoenix Art Space in Brighton, which brings the creative possibilities of cyanotype to life. The course will explore the process and potential of cyanotype over six weeks. It costs £170.
Six weeks of exploration and experimentation
Discover the creative possibilities of cyanotype in this six-week studio course exploring one of the oldest photographic printing processes. Designed for those with some previous experience, the course encourages experimentation, creative play and the development of your own approach in a supportive studio environment.
Across six three-hour sessions, you'll print on a range of materials and surfaces. Starting with textiles such as tote bags, T-shirts and canvas, you'll explore how different fabrics respond before creating digital negatives from your own photographs. You'll then experiment with printing on slippery surfaces like glass and porous surfaces like wood, stone and porcelain, discovering how each material shapes the final image.
In the final session, you'll explore duotone techniques beyond the traditional blue palette and develop a personal project that brings together the processes and materials that interest you most.
Through demonstrations, guided exercises and one-to-one support, you'll build the confidence to work independently while creating a varied body of experimental prints.
Suitable for: Adults with a basic understanding of cyanotype who want to expand their skills through experimentation. Participants with previous experience will deepen their technical knowledge and develop a more personal body of work.
Most materials are provided but please bring along surfaces that interest you or you have a project in mind to make on. They must be 100% organic materials/surfaces. For example silk, jean material, cotton, unglazed clay pottery/porcelain, stone & wood.
T-shirt/tote bags, cartridge paper, canvas and some small bits of wood & stone will be provided alongside the cyanotype fluid & solarfast dye.
Costs: £170
Days: 6 Wednesday evenings
