Are you ready to face the undead in one of Brighton’s most atmospheric and eerie buildings? Welcome to the world of the malicious never-alive that lurk in the dark basement at Number 10 Brunswick Square. Outside it has all the elegance of a cream-coloured Regency Town House. Inside is a very different story. Go down the steps worn away by 200 years of servants’ feet and you will emerge into a world dominated by shadows, secrets and the undead. Real fear comes when strange paranormal phenomena erupts to torment the living, fuelled by long-held grievances. You can feel sorry for some of the tortured men and women, but not all of them. Some deserve their fate. Fortified by wine, you will be guided through dark corridors, passing by the arsenic-impregnated man-sized meat safe into the chilling kitchen where you will believe that sometimes Time can run backwards. You will then be invited to your seat in the servants’ hall where generations of parlour maids and kitchen skivvies once ate and slept. Here, where so little has changed since the 19th century, they seem only a shadow’s-width away. This is where stories of strange happenings and sinister tricks will unfold. You will meet a vulnerable young soldier and a conniving cook, but the evil begins with an aristocratic couple living off the misery of others. If only it ended with them… Why have we called it The Last Halloween? Because it could well be precisely that – we will tell you more on the night – but also because we are visiting a time and place that we may not wish to return to ever again.
