1.45pm - 3.30pm: Lymphoedema and Lipoedema by Carol-Ann Barrett
Carol-Ann is trained in both the Dr Vodder and Casley-Smith methods of MLD and has trained at the Christie Hospital in Manchester with Registered Physiotherapist and international lecturer Willem Fourie in the treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal issues experienced following surgery and radiotherapy after breast and other cancers. MLD is specialized therapy designed to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is an important part of the body’s immune system. MLD treatment was developed in the early 1930s by the Danish physical therapist Dr Emil Vodder. Modern day research has established the effectiveness of the treatment on the lymphatic and nervous systems and MLD as a result is becoming an accepted and effective treatment used in the management of conditions such as lymphoedema, lipoedema and venous insufficiency combined with compression bandaging, exercise, skin care regimes and breathing exercises. Lymphoedema once established cannot be cured and must be treated to prevent a worsening of the condition. Carol-Ann and her physiotherapist daughter run Hands2health in Bishops Stortford, they have lectured in hospital and group settings.
3.30pm - 5.00pm: Precious soles specialist shoe fitters by Jonathan Varnavas, Founder of ShoeFit.uk
Jonathan has spent 24 years in footwear retail, including 15 years as a footwear consultant and 9 years in biomechanical rehabilitation. With a background in Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation, he brings a clinical understanding of how the foot, the body and footwear work together. He founded ShoeFit.uk to bridge the gap between footwear retail and healthcare professionals. Working closely with podiatrists, physiotherapists and other clinicians, Jonathan and his team of highly trained footwear consultants at Precious Soles carry out in-depth footwear assessments and write detailed consultation reports, so that what a patient wears every day supports their treatment.
Through the ShoeFit Academy, he trains universities, students and retail shops in the importance of correct fitting. His talk draws on real data from the team's consultation reports, giving a practical look at the footwear problems clinicians see every day and how to solve them.
