About This Event

A guided walk titled 'Flint, Bricks, Fur and Forest: Brandon's Industries' is scheduled for 15 September 2026 at 10:00 in Cambridge. The event explores Brandon’s industrial heritage and is free to attend.

A guided walk through Brandon's industrial heritage for the town's Heritage Open Days.

Learn more about the rich heritage of Brandon on this guided heritage walk. Explore the lives of workers in flint knapping and in fur-processing factories and other Brandon industries, as well as a visit to the Engine House at the Country Park to find out more about life in a country estate. We will also explore the flint-knapped mausoleum in the Country Park and discover the story of its creator, 19th century gunflint industrialist Edward Bliss: the man who owned a mansion and estate and planted 1 million trees that became part of Thetford Forest.

This route has been specially created for Brandon's Heritage Open Days and will be guided by Imogen Radford and OSBrecks volunteers.

Distance: 2.9 miles/4.7km (with an option to shortcut at 2.1 miles/3.4km)

Cost: Fully funded with thanks to the support of Brandon Town Council.

Suitable for: All ages, though part of the walk is alongside a busy road, so may be tricky for young families.

Accessibility: Most of this walk takes place on pavements and firm forest tracks. If you have any accessibility questions, please contact us at brecks@suffolk.gov.uk or on 01473 265600.

Facilities: There is a café and toilet facilities at the start and end of this route, as well as various cafés on route in town. There are also toilets in the Brandon Centre at the halfway mark of the route.

Public Transport:

The closest bus stops are Green Road (25 minutes walk) or George Street (15 minutes walk). For information on bus times, visit bustimes.org

Brandon train station is located 35 minutes walk away with trains from Thetford, Norwich and Cambridge.

Dogs: This walk is not dog friendly.
