Please note: This event is taking place at The Portland Arms South London six-piece Gently Tender today announce their second studio album This Was Once Fields via TODO Records. They also share their new single ‘Don’t Sleep’ , of which songwriter Sam Fryer shares: “‘Don’t Sleep’ is about the feeling you get when you’re driving through a city at nighttime. I call it an Uber Pop song because whenever I listen to it, it sounds like I’m in a late-night cab. I’m wrestling between love and hate for the city. When I scream ‘I love this place’ it’s almost through gritted teeth. Over the years I have struggled with London – but when I reflect upon it – I have to pay my respects to how it’s shaped my life artistically.” This is accompanied with a music video, also directed by Sam Fryer, that takes to the countryside to depict this love-hate dichotomy of city life, floating between berry picking in blissful fields to frantic satellite ariel wielding. This Was Once Fields arrives as Gently Tender’s first new music since 2023, their stirring indie rock sound built from lush harmonies and pastoral melodies, touching on elements of folk, punk and soul. In 2022 the band released their Matthew E White-produced debut album Take Hold Of Your Promise! , twelve songs of soulful, anthemic Americana, that ushered in a new creative chapter for many of the band members who had played together since they were teenagers. A collective effort since its very inception, Gently Tender opened its arms in the creation of this record to musicians Francesca Brierley (multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who also makes music as heka) and Evie Hilyer-Ziegler (current member of Cusk whom Sam had also played alongside in folk group Broadside Hacks brings flourishes of violin and flute) to join former Palma Violets members Sam Fryer, Pete Mayhew and Will Doyle, plus guitarist Adam Brown. Line-upGently Tender
Gently Tender is a British indie band featuring Sam Fryer, Pete Mayhew and Will Doyle (previously all in Palma Violets, alongside Celia Archer (from The Big Moon) and guitarist Adam Brown. Gently Tender may seem like a fresh new band pulled together from time distancing themselves from the shadow of their former band, but in reality, it’s the sort of evolution they’d been teasing as those latter Palmas years wound out.
