Sacred music by Thomas Tallis for Catholic and Protestant monarchs
The online box-office will close at 11am on Sat 12th September. After that, tickets will be available on the door.
Thomas Tallis is recognised as one of England’s greatest and most popular composers. But not only was he a musician of distinction, he was required to be a musical chameleon during the turbulent years of the mid-16th century English Reformation when the state’s religion (and the sacred music it required) swung from one extreme to the other with each succeeding Tudor monarch.
In this concert of Tallis’s sacred music, the men of DE PROFUNDIS directed by David Skinner show the huge range of musical styles in which Tallis was required to write to fit in with the ever-changing religious landscape. We’ll hear many of Tallis’s most popular works, including the heartfelt first set of Lamentations, ascetic English anthems like Hear the voice and prayer, and the hedonistic luxury of Loquebantur variis linguis and the Missa Puer natus est nobis.
DAVID SKINNER is Fellow and Osborn Director of Music at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He is co-founder of The Cardinall’s Musick and artistic director of the early music group Alamire. His particular specialism is music and the Reformation in England. Alamire’s album Anne Boleyn’s Songbook was nominated for a BBC Music Award, while The Spy’s Choirbook won the 2015 Gramophone Early Music Award.
