Building Services Optimisation for Ultra Low Energy Fabric Design.

Presenter Jason Fitzsimmons is Associate Director and Sustainability Lead at Services Design Solution (SDS), a Certified Passivhaus Expert (CEPH) and an experienced building services engineer specialising in low-energy and Passivhaus design. This presentation will draw on lessons learnt from individual private housing to social housing apartment schemes - with conversations continuing afterwards in the bar!

Jason is Associate Director and Sustainability Lead at Services Design Solution (SDS). He is a Certified Passivhaus Designer and Consultant, Chartered Engineer, Building Physicist and Mechanical Engineer with over 25 years of experience in low-energy building design and more than 15 years working on Passivhaus projects.

His Passivhaus experience spans social housing, private housing, schools, healthcare and leisure centres, acting in roles including Building Services Engineer, Building Physicist and Passivhaus Designer. Jason was part of the team behind the UK's first certified multi-residential Passivhaus scheme, Knights Place (completed 2012) and subsequently led a two-year in-depth Building Performance Evaluation study, monitoring energy use, indoor environmental quality and occupant comfort in operation.

Jason was also Lead Building Physicist and Passivhaus Designer on St Sidwell's Point in Exeter, the world's first certified Passivhaus leisure centre, where he was involved from the early research stages through design, construction and certification. He has since worked on numerous large-scale Passivhaus projects, including leisure centres, schools and residential developments across the UK

Beyond Passivhaus, Jason's experience includes building biology, climate change adaptation, building performance testing and monitoring, operational energy analysis and whole-life carbon assessment. He has contributed to a number of industry research projects and publications relating to low energy and climate resilience.

Away from work, Jason has been undertaking a deep retrofit of his own 200-year-old Devon cob cottage, applying many of the same principles he advocates professionally, including the use of natural materials such as wood fibre insulation, cork and insulated lime render systems.
