About This Event

A site visit to the Cardiff Heat Network will occur on 17 November 2026 at Sustainable Energy Ltd. This event, organised by CIBSE Heat Networks and YEN South Wales, provides a behind-the-scenes look at one of Wales' largest district heating schemes for a fee of £3.00.

Join CIBSE Heat Networks and YEN South Wales behind the scenes of one of Wales' largest district heating schemes

Join us for a behind the scenes visit to the Cardiff Heat Network, one of Wales’ largest district heating schemes, and discover how energy that would otherwise be lost during the waste disposal process is being used to heat buildings across the city.

Site Visit Details

The approximately four-hour site visit will begin with a short presentation at Sustainable Energy Ltd, where participants will learn about the development of the Cardiff Heat Network, how district heating works and the technical challenges involved in developing and operating a city-scale heat network.

We will then travel to the Viridor ERF, where attendees will see how energy recovered from waste is converted into useful heat. The visit will include the heat recovery equipment and heat exchanger, which supplies hot water to the network at around 95°C. We will explain how heat is recovered, transferred into the network and ultimately delivered to connected buildings.

The tour will continue to the backup Energy Centre, providing an opportunity to learn more about the history, operation and development of the network. We will also explore some of the scheme's more distinctive features, including the pipe bridge, above-ground pipework and compact energy centre design.

Throughout the visit, presentations and discussions will explore both the technical and practical aspects of district heating, including the role of heat recovery, network operation, carbon reduction, future expansion and the challenges of connecting more buildings to a growing city-wide heat network.

Please arrive in time for a 12:30 pm start. The group will travel to the operational site as part of the visit.
