About This Session

Cardiff Council and Food Cardiff are inviting residents, community groups, and local partners to a practical, solutions‑focused workshop on reducing household and community waste.

We know that meaningful change requires action across the whole food and waste system — from how food is produced and packaged, to how retailers and hospitality manage surplus, to city‑wide infrastructure and national policy.

This session focuses specifically on the part of the system where citizens and communities can have the most direct influence: waste created in homes and neighbourhoods. This is due to a funding opportunity unlocked through Extended Producer Responsibility which must be spent by local authority on this area of change. This includes food waste, everyday packaging (such as takeaway containers and single-use coffee cups), and the day‑to‑day behaviours that shape what ends up in Cardiff’s bins. Insights from this workshop will feed directly into the city’s waste and food strategies and complement wider work happening across supply chains, retail, hospitality, and manufacturing.

Food and Packaging waste was highlighted in Food Cardiff’s Food Conversations (https://foodcardiff.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/FC-Report-2025-A4-FULL-REP-COVER-ENG-merged.pdf) report as a key priority so we welcome this opportunity to partner with Cardiff Council on where we can influence change and projects in this area. Additionally, we see the UK wastes around 9.52 million tonnes of food each year, with 67% of wasted food that could have been eaten, representing a huge opportunity for reduction. Household food waste is estimated to cost UK families around £14 billion per year, with the average household throwing away £470 of edible food annually.

This is your opportunity to help shape Cardiff’s developing waste and food strategies and contribute local insight, lived experience, and community‑rooted solutions.

11am-11.15am – Introducing Early Ideas: From existing engagement and insights, we want to consult on 3 themes that have been identified and after the break, discuss feasibility and what needs to happen to ensure reduced waste.

11.15-11.30am – Coffee/tea break

11.30-1pm – Exploring Early Ideas

· Consultation & workshopping on 3 themes that have been identified and discuss feasibility and what needs to happen to ensure reduced waste.

o Resuable Cups: Building on insights from the FOR Cardiff reusable cup pilot and identify most impactful locations to reintroduce this work

o Community Dietitians & Low‑Waste Cooking: support knowledge and resources in communities and households to cook affordably; eating seasonally, reduce waste; use food safely and efficiently and cut energy costs

o Maximising use and value of Food Surplus: building on existing work and pilots such as Redistribution Kitchen Wales and Plot to Pantry to create the most value out of current surplus food and gluts of ingredients

· Open Discussion: Your ideas

o This is a really important part of the day where participants will help identify wider opportunities that could be feasible, building on what we’ve already heard.
