Would you like free small trees for your front garden? / Hoffech chi goed bach am ddim ar gyfer eich gardd flaen?

We're looking to green up streets in Adamsdown, Cathays, Plasnewydd (Roath), and Splott and we need your help!

Coed Caerdydd is a project within the Council’s Parks Department all about planting new trees across the city.

Part of our project includes providing free trees for households to plant in their gardens.

We are particularly keen to promote this in areas where it is difficult to introduce new trees in the street scene and so would like to encourage residents to sign up for planting in their front gardens.

Our offer includes free hedgerow plants, an ornamental small tree, pots and compost.

Plant information

Our species selection focusses on varieties suitable for small front gardens. These will support wildlife, take up carbon dioxide, and provide seasonal interest.

Five mixed hedgerow plants and one ornamental small tree are available per household.

If you are unsure which to select, please get in touch for advice using the contact details below.

Hedgerow plants:

* Alder Buckthorn

* Beech

* Crab Apple

* Dogwood

* Elder

* Guelder Rose

* Hazel

* Spindle

You can select between one to five different plants, a total of five plants will be provided. You can also choose from one of our mixed packs.

Please note the starting height of the plants is approximately 60-80cm. You can trim the plants in future as needed to shape your hedgerow.

Ornamental small trees:

* Corkscrew Hazel

* Dogwood

* Purple Hazel

* Japanese Acer (best suited to shady gardens)

* Witch Hazel

Planting and aftercare information

To enable as many residents as possible to apply, we are also offering free planters and compost.

Please indicate on the booking form if you need:

* Compost (40lt bags, two per household)

* Rectangular planter for the hedgerow (approximately 1m long)

* Pot for the shrub (approximately 60Lt)

We will provide planting and aftercare advice at the event.

Please note the plants need watering through spring / summer and pruning in winter.

Your information

We will ask for your contact details so we can send you further information closer to the event.

We will also ask for your consent to contact you in future to monitor the progress of the trees.

You must be a resident of Adamsdown, Cathays, Plasnewydd (Roath), or Splott with a front garden to apply.

If you only have a back garden or are a Cardiff resident outside of these areas you are welcome to sign up to our more general free trees offer via our Eventbrite, collection events will be held at our Forest Farm tree nursery in March.

Collection information

We will be holding the following collection events (10am-12pm):

* 18th December, Railway Gardens

* 11th February, Splott Community Volunteers (old Splott hub)

* 12th February, Railway Gardens

Please note you will need to be able to carry the plants and materials. Limited support from staff will be available to assist if needed.

If you cannot make these events but are still interested in receiving free plants you can have someone collect on your behalf.

If you cannot transport trees and materials, we also offer deliveries on 8th and 9th January.
