Join us for the launch of this new publication, at 7p.m. on Friday, 30 October 2026, at The Canopi, Tudor Street, Cardiff. Samuel Parry will be in conversation about his new book, Nations Without States. Free admission, all welcome!
Mae'r llyfr hwn yn cynnig dehongliad strwythurol newydd o Gymru o fewn y system-fyd gyfalafol. Trwy gymharu ei datblygiad â Chatalwnia, y Mezzogiorno, a Padania, dangosir sut y bydd gwahaniaethu mewnol yn amlygu ei hun o fewn gwladwriaethau modern. Gan wrthod cenedlaetholdeb methodolegol, mae'r awdur yn ystyried sut y lluniwyd Cymru gan goncwest, canoli gweinyddol, echdynnu adnoddau, dibyniaeth, a datblygiad anwastad ar draws canrifoedd; a thrwy osod Cymru mewn cymhariaeth uniongyrchol â cenhedloedd di-wladwriaeth, datgelir sut y mae tensiynau gwleidyddol a chydnerthedd diwylliannol yn adlewyrchu rolau systemig byd-eang dwfn yn hytrach nag anomaleddau hunaniaethol. Ystyrir sut y mae ffurfio gwladwriaethau, swyddogaethau economaidd, pŵer rhanbarthol, a chylchoedd byd-eang oll wedi cynhyrchu canlyniadau amrywiol sy'n parhau hyd heddiw. Mae dadansoddiad integredig y llyfr o economi wleidyddol, llywodraethu tiriogaethol, a chymdeithaseg hanesyddol, yn dangos bod safle strwythurol Cymru (a rhai rhanbarthau cymharol) yn adlewyrchu gorchmynion systemig sy'n parhau i lunio dadleuon ymreolaeth, marweidd-dra economaidd, a gwrthddywediadau gwladwriaeth fodern.

This book offers a structural and longue durée analysis of Wales, Catalonia, the Mezzogiorno, and Padania, as regional configurations of the capitalist world-system. Rejecting methodological nationalism, it examines how these regions were historically produced through conquest, incorporation, dependency, accumulation, and uneven development within both state structures and global economic processes. Rather than treating them as autonomous ‘stateless nations’, the book analyses their political tensions, economic roles and cultural trajectories as outcomes of their relational position in the world-system. It traces how centralisation, resource extraction, administrative restructuring and differentiated economic functions have shaped their long-term development. Integrating political economy, territorial governance, historical sociology and comparative history, it reveals how modern states are built from internally differentiated regions whose conflicting roles are integral to the reproduction of capitalism. Through deep comparative analysis across centuries, the book illuminates how internal national questions persist, not as anomalies, but as structural features of capitalist modernity.
