Training workshop to build confidence supporting LGBTQ+ people with learning disabilities—practical tools, reflection & inclusive practice

This interactive and reflective training course is designed for professionals working across health, social care, education and community settings who support people with learning disabilities and/or LGBTQ+ identities.

The session explores how to provide inclusive, confident and person-centred support around identity, relationships and wellbeing.

Participants will develop a stronger understanding of LGBTQ+ identities, language and lived experiences, alongside the specific barriers and inequalities faced by people with learning disabilities who are also part of the LGBTQ+ community. Through guided discussion, practical activities and self-reflection, the course creates space to explore personal values, challenge assumptions and build confidence in navigating complex or sensitive situations.

The training combines theory with practice, introducing key concepts such as minority stress, consent and capacity, and relationship diversity, while also equipping participants with tools, resources and approaches they can use immediately in their roles .

By taking part, you will:

Increase your confidence in discussing LGBTQ+ topics and supporting individuals in relationships and identity exploration

Develop a deeper understanding of intersectional experiences, particularly for LGBTQ+ people with learning disabilities

Reflect on your own values, biases and professional responsibilities in a safe and supportive environment

Gain practical strategies, activities and resources to enhance your day-to-day practice

Connect with others working in similar roles and share learning and experiences

What to expect:

A highly participatory session with group discussions, creative exercises and reflective activities

A safe, respectful learning environment where different perspectives can be explored

Opportunities to troubleshoot challenges and explore best practice together

Clear, accessible content designed to be engaging, relevant and immediately applicable

This training is ideal for anyone looking to strengthen inclusive practice, improve outcomes for the people they support, and play an active role in creating safer, more affirming environments for LGBTQ+ individuals with learning disabilities.
