In the first half a succession of shorter pieces offers the perfect prelude to the elegance of Ravel’s exquisitely crafted “Valses nobles et sentimentales”. After the interval Steven plays one of Beethoven’s greatest piano works, the Diabelli Variations, which has rarely if ever appeared in our programmes.
