About This Event

From 21–25 September, the team will open a small evaluation trench on the Bailey, looking for clues that could help us understand more about the history of this scheduled monument. They’ll also be investigating how tree roots may be affecting the archaeological deposits beneath the ground. Come along to see the excavation in progress, chat to the team about what they’re finding and learn about the geophysical survey carried out ahead of the dig. The excavation is reached by following the orange route from the Dove Cot through Big Wood to the Motte and Bailey. You can then continue the walk back via Wat’s Dyke. From the top of the Motte and Bailey there are wide views across Erddig’s parkland, and you may spot buzzards soaring overhead. The walk and excavation are outside the pay-for-entry area, so there is no admission charge to visit the dig. Parking is also free.
