Calan Gaeaf at Chirk Castle celebrates the beginning of winter in the Welsh calendar with a family activity trail. Visitors can explore folklore and stories related to the castle while engaging in activities inspired by nature and local legends. A free trail guide is available from the Ticket Office.
This autumn, National Trust Cymru is celebrating Calan Gaeaf at places across Wales.
Calan Gaeaf marks the beginning of winter in the Welsh calendar on 1 November. Traditionally, the night before – Nos Galan Gaeaf on 31 October – was associated with the changing of the seasons and a time when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld was thought to be at its thinnest.
At Chirk Castle, uncover folklore and curious stories connected with the castle and surrounding area as you follow a family activity trail through the autumn garden.
Pick up your free trail guide from the Ticket Office and set off to discover a series of activities inspired by nature, Welsh folklore and local legends.
Try your hand at knocking down the Harvest Mare in a traditional coconut-shy-style game, follow animal tracks near the Hawk House and get creative with natural materials.
Venture into Pleasure Ground Wood, where the Witch's hut awaits. Can you spot her magical items hidden around the hut?
Then put your skills to the test on an obstacle course inspired by the Red Hand of Chirk, a symbol found throughout the castle with many stories and legends connected to it.
There's more to discover indoors, too, with a corn doll spotting activity in the State Rooms.
Explore at your own pace, enjoy the changing colours of the garden and discover a different side of Chirk Castle this October half term.
No booking needed. The trail is free, with normal admission charges applying.
