You may not have heard of a river bore, or perhaps you have but are unsure when (or why) it occurs. Alternatively, you may just want to find out a bit more about one.

In Norse myth, a bore was created by the sea giant – the Jotun - Aegir. However, it is a natural phenomenon that only takes place on certain rivers at certain times depending on the tides. The Dee downstream of Chester has such a natural wonder - especially notable on the straight canalised section cut in the 1730s.

Paul will shed light on what a bore is, how it forms and why the Dee has one - as well as illustrate how witnessing a Dee Bore can be a highly memorable experience. He will also explain how to know when one can be expected and where can be a good place to observe it. Paul’s image-rich talk includes video footage as well as reference to all-important tide tables.

The talk’s venue is Chester’s historic Bishop Lloyd’s Palace – a building on Watergate Street dating from 1615. Its frontage includes both biblical scenes and mythical panels. The talk takes place in one of its panelled chambers above the level of the Row walkway.

Doors open: 7:10pm and we ask that people are seated for a prompt start at 7:30pm
