The UCC Boole Library in Blackpool presents a double bill of experimental music on Wednesday 16 September, featuring Slovenian trio Širom alongside support act Moundabout. Širom, who record for Glitterbeat, build their sound from a combination of custom-built and traditional instruments, crafting a live performance that feels both otherworldly and deeply organic. Their music shifts through evolving textures and rhythms, progressing as though driven by its own internal logic rather than any conventional structure. Opening the evening will be Moundabout, signed to Rocket Recordings, who bring their own brand of heavy, hypnotic sound to the stage. Doors open at 7pm, with tickets priced at £18.50.
‘See Širom perform live and you similarly enter a place where it feels as if anything might happen’ - The Quietus
The intertwining of diverse musical approaches and tools, histories of sounds and unbridled musical imagination and craftsmanship is the expansive guiding principle of the Širom trio, whose members stem from the regions of Prekmurje, Tolminsko and Kras.
More than a dozen instruments can be found in the repertoire of Iztok Koren, Samo Kutin and Ana Kravanja and at least as many given musical forms that can be perceived as an inspiration behind the character of this new ensemble. However, in their practice as well as experiencing they remain anchored in their creative process to an extent that allows them to avoid merely reflecting existing patterns. What this generates in an original, stylistically homogeneous form of expression that oscillates between a wide array of folk sounds and contemporary acoustic rock-style meditations.
The end result is grounded yet still mystical minimalism. Širom's music is contemplative, but can get harder when necessary, it is closer to being band- than chamber-like, to being street as opposed to urban in nature.
Each member of Širom also performs in a myriad of other bands and music projects, such as ŠKM banda, Hexenbrutal, Najoua, Samo Gromofon, and Horda grdih.

Moundabout is an experimental acid folk project based in Ireland by Paddy Shine, of psychedelic powerhouse GNOD, and Phil ‘Langero’ Masterson, of cult groups Los Langeros, Damp Howl, and Bisect. The duo explore a new form of psychedelic Irish folk music, a combination of enchanting guitar based songs, cathartic electronic improvisations, and storytelling. They invite the listener to become lost in liminal zones and thresholds, where boundaries merge and the inner and outer worlds meet.
They have released 4 full length albums as well as a 7”single and performed at venues and festivals around Ireland and Europe including Le Guess Who, CTM Berlin and Open Ear in Ireland.
