PANORAMA EUROPA

Ursula Burke, Michael Canning, Sian Costello, Genieve Figgis, Claire Halpin, David Eager

Maher, Rachel Fallon, Eleanor McCaughey, Isabel Nolan, Geraldine O’Neill

Panorama Europa presents the work of ten Irish artists who engage with traditions of

European painting to explore contemporary identities and wider societal issues. The

selected paintings, tapestry, sculptures and drawings reference works from Pre-

Renaissance to Impressionism. The exhibition invites you to reflect on these art histories

and consider how artists draw on diverse pictorial tropes to create new modes of

representation.

Workshop options. Choose one of the options relating to the age of your class group.

Primary School Junior Cycle

1. Colour in Everything: Explore colour through collage in this hands-on art

workshop, taking inspiration from the artworks in our current exhibition,

Panorama Europa.

2. Stories in Art: Create your own illustrated storybook in this fun workshop. We will

look at Isabel Nolan’s tapestry and how the artist reimagines a story about St.

Francis of Assisi, before creating our own stories.

Primary School Senior Cycle

1. Reimagining the Masters: Working in pairs, students will create a unique artwork

inspired by a famous historical artist. Exploring colour combinations and using cut-

out techniques, participants will re-imagine well-known masterpieces in their own

contemporary style.

2. Making Myths: Make your own mythical sculpture in this workshop inspired by

the artwork Blue Sphinx Winged by Ursula Burke. Students will learn basic

sculpting techniques.

Secondary School Junior Cycle

1. Symbolism in Art: Explore how artists use visual metaphors to represent complex

emotions, ideas, and experiences. This collage workshop invites students to create

a unique portrait or self-portrait.

2. Europe - Then and Now: Inspired by Claire Halpin’s painting Panorama Europa,

this collaborative workshop invites students to create a map of Europe that brings

together elements of the continent’s geography, history, culture, and politics. The

workshop will introduce participants to mixed media techniques.

Secondary School Senior Cycle

1. Botanical painting: Take the time to embrace the beauty of our natural world and

learn to master watercolour paint in this art workshop. Inspired by Michael

Canning’s paintings, students will give prominence to everyday plant life which

they collect in the university lower grounds.

2. The Golden Ratio: A drawing workshop that explores the techniques used by

Renaissance artists to create complex compositions. Students will apply these

techniques to create a contemporary scene.
