About This Event

BAS10 X CAS December First Thursday will take place on 3 December 2026 at the Anglican Chapel in Coventry. The event will feature a discussion on creative practices in the arts, led by Janet Vaughn of Talking Birds. Attendance is free.

What does a creative, regenerative practice mean for kinds of artists? Janet Vaughn of Talking Birds joins us to chat about States of Nature

Join us for a chat about art with Coventry Art Show special guest Janet Vaughn.

Coventry Artspace has been running First Thursday Artist Gatherings for many years. They give artists a chance to come together, chat about art, network and share ideas and challenges. For this special Coventry Art Show series of First Thursdays, we are also inviting a guest speaker to each event to talk about their work and join the discussion.

Janet Vaughan is someone for whom Tim Morton’s ideas of a networked relationships between humans and the natural world makes a lot of sense.

Artist, theatre designer and key provocateur in Coventry’s arts community, Janet has been exploring the responsibilities of artists for some time: she was in Julie’s Bicycle‘s first cohort of Creative Climate Changemakers, a keen allotmenteer and wildlife gardener, and Advisory Board Member for the WMCA Community Environment Network.

Her work as Co-Artistic Director of Talking Birds centres on the idea of regenerative creative practice - an optimistic and serious approach to addressing access, human connection social and ecological responsibility through all aspects of their activities.

Janet will walk us through the story of how she and Talking Birds has arrived at this way of working and what a creative regenerative practice could mean for all kinds of artists.

The Coventry Art Show is the fringe programme developed by local arts organisations in response to the launch of British Art Show 10: A Chorus of Strangers (https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/british-art-show-10-a-chorus-of-strangers/) in Coventry venues until 10 January 2027.

The Coventry Art Show has 3 strands which reflect the themes of BAS10:

Moments of Being, inspired by the work of Virginia Woolf, this strand is led by Coventry Biennial

Ways of Living, inspired by the work of Stuart Hall, this strand is led by SOMA

States of Nature, inspired by the work of Timothy Morton, this strand is led by Talking Birds

Our special Coventry Art Show First Thursdays are part of the BAS 10 States of Nature strand, so artist and curator contributions will reflect this.

Please get in touch if you have any access issues so that we can support you. All are welcome!

Coventry Art Show is funded by Arts Council England.
