Climate change and land-use change are rapidly reshaping biodiversity and ecosystem functioning worldwide. Insectivorous bats are recognised as important suppressors of agricultural pest populations. Penelope’s research firstly examined how climate and land-use change may reshape the distribution, composition, and functional diversity of European bat assemblages and then looked at bat feeding strategies across bat assemblages. She then focused on the economic value of this ecosystem service in UK vineyards.

About Penelope Fialas:

Penelope first became interested in bats during her Bachelor's degree and was immediately captivated by these remarkable animals. Since then, she has spent more than a decade studying and working on bat ecology and conservation. She completed her Master's studies at the University of Göttingen (Germany) and Lincoln University (New Zealand) before working in Professor G.Jones's Bat Lab at the University of Bristol and undertaking a PhD at the University of Exeter in Dr. Orly Razgour's lab. Her research interests include bat ecology, conservation, species distribution modelling, eDNA, and ecosystem services.
