Coventry Biennial presents a Creative Writing Workshop with Katy & Rebecca Beinart.

Join artists Katy & Rebecca Beinart for a creative writing workshop using family archives as a tool for engaging with the past, from the personal and everyday to social movements and campaigning. This session builds on a previous workshop with the artists that took place in January, as they continue to develop their research with Coventry Biennial.

The duo’s granny Margaret Stanton’s archive (housed in The Modern Records Centre) includes 100s of letters written over decades of civil rights campaigning and notes from meetings and protests. Taking this as a starting point, during this workshop we will explore historical sites of gathering and political organising in Birmingham and Coventry - from town halls to public and domestic spaces.

Through creative writing exercises, we will experiment with writing to these spaces and the people who gathered there - offering a unique opportunity to experiment with the letter-writing form while exploring the hand made qualities of much 20th century campaigning material.

We encourage you to bring along materials (letters, photos, etc…) that relate to your own family’s political or civic life and activities, to use as inspiration.

This workshop is taking place within the residency space where the artists will have been working over the past week at the Herbert Museum & Art Gallery- experimenting with print, textiles, projection and sculpture as they develop new work with support from Coventry Biennial.
