About This Event

The B@R Project Visit to Melbourne Hall Gardens will occur on 29 October 2026, starting at 10:30. This special tour, led by Head Gardener David James, will explore the historic structures within the gardens.

Join us for a special tour of Melbourne Hall Gardens and its historic listed structures led by Head Gardener David James.

Melbourne Hall Gardens is one of the most treasured heritage gardens in the country and is the best surviving early 18th century English garden in the manner of le Notre. It was laid out by Rt. Hon Thomas Coke, Vice Chamberlain to Queen Anne, with help from the garden landscape designers George London and Henry Wise in the formal style.

Join the DHBT B@R team for an exclusive tour of these historic gardens led by Head Gardener David James. Lord Lothian and the team at Melbourne Hall are opening the gardens specially for us on Thursday 29th October, outside of the usual visitor season.

We will explore the gardens' layout and ornamentation, including the Grade I listed wrought iron arbour known as the ‘Birdcage’ which was designed and constructed by the celebrated ironsmith Robert Bakewell between 1706-1708 and finally completed in 1711.

This tour provides the perfect opportunity to explore this rare gem and learn more about its development, from its origins in the 18th century right up to the present day. Along the way, B@R app volunteers will also have the chance to survey some of the varied listed structures in the grounds.

Whether you are interested in local history, have downloaded the app but need some help to get started, or you’re a seasoned B@R app expert- all are welcome!

You will have the opportunity to meet our friendly team and other like-minded people in a relaxed, sociable environment whilst learning more about Melbourne Hall and its gardens.

The cost of the tickets will cover the garden entrance price and guided tour.
