Managing Grief at Christmas
A Compassionate Workshop Supporting Those Experiencing Bereavement
Hosted by Road Victims Support Northern Ireland & Donegal
Workshop Overview
Christmas is often described as the most wonderful time of the year, filled with celebrations, family gatherings, traditions and togetherness. However, for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, the festive season can be one of the most emotionally challenging times of the year.
The empty chair at the Christmas table, familiar traditions, treasured memories and the absence of someone special can make grief feel particularly overwhelming.
Our Managing Grief at Christmas workshop has been designed to offer a safe, welcoming and compassionate environment where individuals can explore the challenges of bereavement during the festive season, learn practical coping strategies and find comfort in connecting with others who understand.
Who Is This Workshop For?
This workshop is open to everyone experiencing grief, regardless of the circumstances of their loss.
Although Road Victims Support Northern Ireland & Donegal was founded to support individuals and families bereaved through road traffic collisions, we recognise that grief affects people from all walks of life.
Whether you have lost a loved one through illness, sudden death, an accident, suicide, or any other circumstances, you are warmly welcome.
There is no time limit on grief. Whether your bereavement is recent or happened many years ago, Christmas can bring emotions and memories to the surface.
You do not need to have experienced a road traffic bereavement to attend this workshop.
Our message is simple:
Grief has no boundaries, and neither does our compassion.
What the Workshop Will Include
1. Understanding Grief During the Festive Season
Exploring why Christmas can intensify feelings of grief and loss.
2. Managing Expectations and Christmas Pressures
Christmas can bring pressure to celebrate, socialise and appear happy, even when someone is struggling emotionally.
3. Practical Coping Strategies for Christmas
Participants will be introduced to simple, practical ways to help manage difficult emotions and situations throughout the festive season.
4. Remembering and Honouring Our Loved Ones
Christmas can be particularly painful when someone who played an important part in our celebrations is no longer physically present.
5. Supporting Family Members Who Grieve Differently
Grief affects everyone differently, even within the same family.
6. Looking After Yourself
During grief, it can be easy to overlook your own physical and emotional wellbeing.
7. Personal Reflection – “My Christmas, My Way”
A gentle, optional reflective activity will encourage participants to think about how they would like to approach the festive season.
8. Connection, Conversation and Support
An important element of the workshop will be the opportunity to connect with others who understand the challenges of grief.
Nobody will be expected to share their story, speak publicly or take part in anything that makes them uncomfortable.
Simply attending and listening is equally valuable.
What Participants Can Expect
The workshop will be delivered in a relaxed, supportive and non-judgemental environment, with sensitivity to the emotional nature of the subject.
It will not be a formal counselling session or group therapy. Instead, it will offer bereavement education, emotional support, practical guidance and opportunities for personal reflection.
What We Hope Participants Will Gain
By the end of the workshop, we hope participants will:
Have a greater understanding of why grief can feel particularly difficult at Christmas.
Feel reassured that their emotions and experiences are valid.
Have practical strategies to manage difficult moments throughout the festive season.
Feel more confident setting boundaries and making decisions that protect their emotional wellbeing.
Identify meaningful ways to remember and honour their loved ones.
Feel less isolated and more connected to others who understand.
Leave with a personal plan for approaching Christmas in a way that feels manageable for them.
Our Overall Aim
Our aim is not to remove the pain of grief, encourage people to move on or suggest that Christmas should be a happy occasion for everyone.
Instead, we want to acknowledge that Christmas after loss can look and feel very different.
We hope to provide a space where people feel heard, understood and supported, while offering practical guidance to help them navigate the weeks ahead.
Most importantly, we want everyone attending to know that they do not have to face Christmas alone.
Christmas after loss is not about forgetting the person who is missing or trying to recreate the Christmases we once knew.
It is about giving ourselves permission to grieve, to remember, to change traditions, to find comfort where we c
