RIA and ALLEA workshop on artificial intelligence in research from the perspective of research ethics and integrity.

The Royal Irish Academy and the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, ALLEA, will host this workshop in Dublin on the morning of 28 October 2026, on the important topic of artificial intelligence in research from the perspective of research ethics and integrity. This event will be chaired by Maura Hiney MRIA, chair of the ALLEA Research Ethics and Integrity Council (REIC), with contributions from members of REIC and other invited experts.

Themes include:

trust in AI-assisted research assessment

the relationship between AI and academic freedom

the specific impact of AI on research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences

This event comes at a time of substantial reflection and consideration in higher education and research communities on the responsible use of AI systems and technologies. Moreover, with the ALLEA European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity currently under review, there is an opportunity to consider how the broad principles agreed across Europe and already incorporated into practice in Ireland and other states can continue to be upheld in a changing research environment. This will be given specific consideration during a panel discussion on the role of codes in ensuring ethics and integrity in research.
