Beginners' Course in Japanese Martial Arts – Dublin
A one-month introduction to Bujinkan Budō Taijutsu at Jishin Dojo
Starts Monday 2 November 2026, 19.00 - 20.00
Classes every Monday & Wednesday for one month
Course fee: €80 – including training uniform and beginners' manual
No previous martial arts experience required
If you've ever thought about trying a martial art but weren't quite sure where to begin, this course is for you.
Jishin Dojo's Beginners' Course is a structured introduction to the way we train in Bujinkan Budō Taijutsu, a Japanese martial tradition incorporating unarmed combat, movement, striking and weapons training.
You don't need to be particularly fit, flexible or experienced before you start. The purpose of the course is to teach you the foundations safely and progressively alongside other beginners.
What you'll learn
Over the month we'll introduce you to:
Taihenjutsu – body movement, angling, distance and positioning.
Ukemi – receiving techniques, including how to roll, move and land safely.
Striking – fundamental striking methods and how they integrate with movement.
Japanese weapons – an introduction to either kenjutsu (sword) or hanbōjutsu (staff), depending on the interests of the group.
Principles of Budō Taijutsu – rather than simply memorising techniques, you'll begin exploring how timing, balance, distance and movement work together.
The course is intended to give you a genuine taste of training rather than promise instant expertise. By the end of the month, you'll understand the basic vocabulary and movements of the dojo and be ready to take part comfortably in our regular classes.
Who is it for?
The course for anyone over the age of eighteen. You don't need any previous martial arts experience.
Our emphasis is on thoughtful, cooperative training. At the beginning we emphasise working with training partners rather than compete against them, gradually developing technique through practice.
What's included?
The complete one-month course costs €80, including:
Eight classes · Training uniform · Jishin Dojo beginners' manual
There are no additional equipment costs for the course.
What happens afterwards?
There is no obligation to continue after the beginners' course.
If you enjoy the training, however, the course is designed as your gateway into our regular classes. After finishing the course participants can continue training for €50 per month.
