Join Danielle Stevenson, senior horticulturist at Arboretum Home and Garden Centre, for a relaxed, hands-on terrarium workshop suitable for complete beginners as well as established houseplant enthusiasts.

Danielle will introduce the different kinds of terrarium, from open and closed ecosystems to vivariums and displays designed for cacti and succulents. She will explain which plants suit each environment and guide participants through the process of layering, planting and finishing their own closed terrarium.

You will then build your own miniature indoor garden using a glass terrarium with cork lid, three to four carefully selected plants, soil, moss, activated carbon, drainage material and decorative stones. Danielle will be on hand throughout to help with planting, composition and those important finishing touches.

The session will also cover:

· The difference between open and closed terrariums

· Choosing plants that will thrive together

· Creating effective drainage and soil layers

· Positioning and caring for your terrarium

· Common problems and how to avoid them

· Maintaining your miniature ecosystem at home

There will be time for questions at the end of the workshop, along with an opportunity to purchase specialist aftercare tools, including long-handled scissors, brushes and tweezers.

Every participant will leave with a fully completed terrarium to take home. All plants, materials and the use of tools are included in the ticket price.

Participants are also very welcome to bring a small decorative object of their own, such as a shell, miniature figure or tiny ornament, to make their terrarium completely personal.

About Danielle Stevenson

Danielle Stevenson is the senior horticulturist at Arboretum Home and Garden Centre and oversees its extensive houseplant department.

After four decades in the hospitality industry, Danielle followed her longstanding passion for plants and nature, completing diplomas in botany, horticulture, gardening and landscape design through distance learning. She is now an integral member of the team at Arboretum’s flagship centre in Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow, as well as a mentor to colleagues in its Carlow and Dublin city locations.

A passionate, self-taught horticulturist specialising in houseplants, Danielle organised Arboretum’s successful dedicated houseplant event in 2025. She has a particular interest in the relationship between nature and our mental and physical wellbeing.
