Viking Ireland and the Wider World

For the ninth year running, the National University of Ireland, Dublin City Council Archaeology Section, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ireland, Dublinia , and the Friends of Medieval Dublin, are pleased to collaborate and contribute a Viking-themed event to the Dublin Festival of History Programme. This year we are honoured to host scholars from Norway and Ireland to discuss Viking Ireland and the Wider World.

Speakers

Neil Jackman is an archaeologist with Abarta Heritage and the project manager of the Woodstown Viking Site on behalf of Waterford City and County Council, and the author of the Conservation Management Plan for the site. Neil has a particular interest in public archaeology and how we communicate the story of the past.

Susan Curran is an archaeologist with The Discovery Programme and is currently Principal Investigator for the COALESCE-funded project Tara by Name, Tara by Nature? Exploring the archaeological connections between Ireland’s temair places. Susan’s main research interests include landscape archaeology, remote sensing (primarily lidar & geophysics), GIS, and early medieval Ireland with a particular focus on early medieval settlement and society.

Kristin Armstrong Oma is a professor of archaeology and currently the museum director of the Museum of Archaeology, University of Stavanger. Her academic work bridges archaeology and the interdisciplinary field of Human-Animal Studies. She seeks to insert time-depth into current debates on the state of animals in society to contextualise and nuance today’s husbandry practices.

Caitlin Ellis

Caitlin Ellis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo. She is a historian of the early medieval and central medieval periods. Her research into maritime networks and cultural contacts focuses on the Vikings and Normans in Britain, Ireland and the North Atlantic. She uses textual and material evidence to analyse identity, trading connections, religious change, and the expression of power.
