Born in Monkstown, Dublin, Liam’s musical journey began at an early age. A fluent Irish speaker, he developed a deep appreciation for Irish language and culture, influenced greatly by his father. His talents on the bodhrán earned him an All-Ireland under-18 award, while his early musical collaborations included playing alongside childhood friends Kevin Shields and Colm Ó Cíosóig, who would go on to form My Bloody Valentine.

In 1985, Liam co-founded Hothouse Flowers with Fiachna Ó Braonáin, establishing a band whose unique blend of Irish traditional music, soul, gospel, rock and improvisation would earn them international acclaim.

Beyond Hothouse Flowers, Liam has forged a remarkable solo career, including his acclaimed Irish-language album Rían. He has also collaborated with musicians from around the world, exploring music as a universal language and creating extraordinary cross-cultural projects. His musical journey was captured in the documentary Dambé: The Mali Project, which followed a remarkable 3,000-mile musical adventure through West Africa.

For Liam Ó Maonlaí, music is not simply performance — it is connection, conversation, heritage and discovery.
