An informal, active and interactive introduction to Bulgarian folk dance and music - information, practice and conversations. What happens when rhythm is not something you simply count, but something you move through? Join Slavi Begov for an informal, active and interactive introduction to the fascinating world of Bulgarian folk dance and music. Whether you are a musician, an experienced folk dancer, or simply curious about Bulgarian traditions, this evening offers an opportunity to explore the close relationship between rhythm, melody and movement and to experience some of the distinctive qualities of Bulgarian horo for yourself. Part 1 · 7:30–9:00 pm We will start with a few accessible dances built around repetitive patterns, breaking down the steps so you can experience not only what to do, but how the movement relates to the music. You will hear about Bulgarian irregular metres such as 5/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 11/8 etc. in simple, practical terms and experience some of them through movement. Along the way, Slavi will introduce some of Bulgaria’s regional musical traditions and instruments, share stories from his own journey into folk dance and his study of the gaida (Bulgarian bagpipe), and demonstrate how the music comes alive when accompanied by a live instrument. Part 2 · 9:15–10:15 pm The evening continues with more dancing, music, tunes and informal conversation. There will be plenty of opportunities to try things out, ask questions, compare experiences and simply enjoy the music and movement together. No previous knowledge of Bulgarian dance is required. But if you already have experience with folk music or dance, come ready to listen more closely, feel the rhythms differently, and discover some of the ideas behind Bulgarian horo that we will explore further in the upcoming 5-week course. Please note, the event is held in the Backroom of the Cobblestone pub. Doors from 7pm. This event is included in the FULL membership of the five-week exploration of Bulgarian folk dances and music (https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/bulgarian-bagpipes-and-folk-dances-in-dublin-5-fridays-tickets-1997974471428/)
