Learn how to paint an atmospheric forest scene in watercolour with acclaimed artist Kasper Zier

Join Kasper for a fun and creative day of painting at the United Arts Club in Dublin!

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore how to create a luminous, atmospheric forest scene in watercolour, capturing dappled sunlight filtering through woodland trees.

Come along and practice how to render organic tree structures, delicate branch networks, and subtle depth within a woodland setting. Kasper will share his approach to painting soft, glowing light, layering foliage, and creating texture on bark.

The day will be structured around a three-part demonstration. After each stage, Kasper will guide and assist students individually as they apply the techniques to their own paintings.

We’ll begin with a value study exercise based on the chosen reference image, along with an explanation of how a strong value plan can serve as a roadmap to a successful painting.

Throughout the workshop, we’ll cover:

• How to simplify and enhance a complex forest photo reference into a cohesive, pleasing composition.

• The value of connecting dark and mid-tone shapes across the background and foreground.

• How to use an expressive, alternative colour palette to elevate the mood rather than strictly copying the reference photo.

All of this and more will be delivered through step-by-step demonstrations and personalised guidance.

Art materials will be provided, though students are welcome to bring along their own if preferred.

About the teacher: Kasper Zier is an award winning watercolour artist living and working in Dublin. His watercolours are a mesmerising blend of realism and poetry, elevating the mundane into a dreamy quality. Using a masterful combination of clear colours, free expressive brushstrokes, and 'lost and found' edges, Kasper artfully captures the interplay of light on the city's buildings and streets. The end result is a unique painting full of atmosphere and character, carrying his personal touch and creating a lasting impression on the viewer.
