About This Event

Read and explore great writing in a relaxed and welcoming environment. This event is for adults. Why not try shared reading in Ballyroan's Reading Circle? Shared Reading groups bring people together to talk, laugh and share. Just drop in, grab a cuppa and enjoy listening to a story or poem - no pressure to talk or to read. We started the new year sessions with Irish and World poetry readings, from Paula Meehan's poetry collections to the work of the Athens-born poet Kiki Dimoula, and the postcolonial poet and novelist Ben Okri. We continued in March - April 2026 with readings from the 9th-11th century Irish poetry, as well as with Hafiz'es Persian poetry on the theme of love - significantly, on writers and poets influenced by his work, from Emily Dickinson and Ralph Waldo Emerson to W.B. Yeats and the Rhymers' Club poets, and contemporary poets such as Sholeh Wolpé. In the month of June, we celebrated Bloomsday with a session on 'Yeats and Joyce: 'Who Goes with Fergus'' on the fascinating relationship between the two literary figures! Join us for the autumn sessions (led by a library staff member and scholar in literature), to explore more poem collections by the well-travelled Irish poet and polyglot, born in Limerick, Desmond O' Grady. Please bring along poems that you would wish to share and discuss with the group, including those inspired by our wonderful discussions.
